Peer Educators

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Peer Educator to join the team at this Sunderland based Voluntary Sector Youth Organisation.

Youth Almighty are one of the North Easts Largest Youth Providers and are rapidly expanding due to its unique governance which is 100% youth led with funding recently being secured from a number of external funders.

Having recently been involved with the BBC in its own documentary “Under Age and Over the Limit” the project has seen large increases in access to its services and is therefore expanding to cope with local needs.

Youth Almighty are predominantly a Centre Based Provider of high standard Youth Provision, Training and Education but in addition we have a distinct model of detached engagement work that targets some of the area’s hardest to reach young people, working closely with our partners including the local authority, local schools, the police, RSL’s and LMAPs (Local Multi Agency Partnership).

We are now seeking exceptional individuals to engage with young people, form a trusted relationship and to support them.

The Role

  • Engaging with young people and empowering them to take action on general issues affecting their lives, including health, education, unemployment and the environment, encouraging positive skills and attitudes.

  • Befriending and supporting individuals who attend Silksworth Youth & Community Centre or other project settings, mentoring and supporting them and encouraging social inclusion.

  • Encouraging young people to volunteer in positive activity that is of benefit to themselves, their peers or the wider community.

  • To work alongside the youth work teams and assist in all areas of the projects current work i.e youth sessions, junior sessions, detached & outreach, accreditation work, sports, volunteering and intergenerational work.

  • To undertake training with other members of YAP staff team as appropriate.

  • To build a portfolio of achievement, which will include certificates and qualifications.

  • To work within YAPs policies and procedures.

  • To be aware of issues affecting young people.

  • To encourage young people to join in community programs and projects via publicity materials including posters, leaflets, presentations etc.

  • To be a member of and actively support the roles and functions of the Youth Committee.

* The ability to follow instructions
* An understanding of the needs of socially excluded young people, skills to communicate effectively with young people and the ability to motivate and engage them positively.
* An ability to work flexibly and manage time effectively.

This is a challenging, but highly rewarding job, which will allow you to make a real difference to the lives of other young people.

It is anticipated that this role would be ideally suited to a recent school leaver as the project would like to further its development of young people by assisting them in making a positive contribution to their community.
